What is ecstatic dance?
Some say it's the new yoga.
Some say it's the ultimate moving meditation.
Some say it's dance medicine to regulate emotions.
Some say it's a somatic embodiment experience.
Some say it's the ultimate stress release .
Some say it's the dance of “Self Love”’.
What it is not:
No steps to remember- there is no choreography.
No line dancing or formations
Not a couples dance.
No such thing as being good or bad at ecstatic dance.
Not a psychedelic experience - although with practice you can get into higher conscious states. Not a dance to socialize but you will feel great connection to your friends
Ecstatic dance is a free- form movement practice to help you get out of your thinking and into your body accessing your spirit and authentic self. Basically, it’s a somatic embodiment that is super fun with great music and no judgment. In this practice there are no good or bad movers- we all move to our own beat, style and energy. It boosts the feel- good hormone endorphins.
The structure:
We dance to the 5 rhythms starting from a slow flow and meditative breath, releasing tightness and blockages. We move through a staccato rhythm opening and energizing the 6 chakras to then transcending to higher chaotic energy releasing all that doesn't serve us. We dance with the spirit of the inner child and joy. We close our circle and end our dance in stillness. Our facilitator will open and close the practice, offering limited cues and suggestions for movements, but it's all optional. You can stay on your yoga mat the whole time if that is where you want to be.
The music is intentionally planned to facilitate these 5 segments and the facilitator will give some cues to help you move through each segment. But it’s really your body that will be in control- nobody else.
What to wear:
Yoga clothes, loose flowy clothes, shorts and a T or a comfortable dress. Any attire that makes you feel good in your body . We dance barefoot or in sneakers. Our holistic health assessment takes into consideration not just physical health, but also mental, emotional, and spiritual health. We'll help you identify areas of imbalance and develop a plan to achieve optimal health.
